ARTIST STATEMENT

Coast is inspired by the time I have spent in various locations along the coastline of Eastern Australia. The exhibition encapsulates the unfolding nature of my sensory experience of coastal environments.

I am interested in the associative implications of natural materials or the found object. I use actual objects or aspects of their materiality in conjunction with modelled clay components to express my lived experience of the natural environment.

My experiential contemplations are underpinned by relevant research about these encounters with the natural world. The cultural, historical, scientific and environmental narratives create a concept containing an inherent layering of meaning and association to the wider world.

The conditions of the coastline constantly change and it is the ephemeral beauty of being in the moment that I have aimed to capture in this collection of works.

Helen Earl is a Sydney-based artist and educator.  Her practice explores ideas of connection and continuity between the domestic space and that of the surrounding natural environment. Helen has just been awarded the “2015 People’s Choice Award, Sculpture in the Glen”.  In 2011, Helen was the Artist in Residence at the Botanic Gardens, Sydney, and in 2013 undertook a Bathurst Regional Gallery, Hill End artist’s residency at the historic Haeflingers Cottage.
