This exhibition features beautiful new work by Clare Unger.

When fabric is rolled onto the clay it leaves a wonderful imprint. By using a variety of fabrics that have associations with people, places or events in my life I am pondering the many and varied influences that have shaped who I am, the family that I come from and that I have in turn created.

I have constructed my vessels with overlapping fragments or pieces of clay.

The complex layering of the imprinted clay fragments, which are enhanced by the addition of terra-sigallata, oxides and under-glaze colours, emphasizes the fragmentary nature of the memories and recollections with which I construct my families’ stories and gain my sense of identity.

Clare Unger was born in Zimbabwe.  She studied Fine Art at the University of Cape Town majoring in Printmaking.  While living in the UK she attended ceramic classes at a community college in London. After immigrating to Australia Clare obtained a Certificate 3 in ceramics, followed by a Diploma of Visual Arts (Ceramics) at the Northern Sydney Institute of Tafe  (Hornsby).  She is currently in the second year of an Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts (Ceramics) at Hornsby TAFE.
