KIYOSHI ANDO

CERAMICS

1 - 22 MARCH 2014

10am - 5pm Tuesday to Saturday

Tokyo-born visual artist and zen garden designer, Kiyoshi Ando, is a graduate of a Japanese fine arts university who has lived in Australia for over 20 years. Kiyoshi brings a distinctive sensibility to and a personal affinity with the shapes, colours and textures of nature – in both its wild and tamed instances. Kiyoshi currently works in diverse artistic compositions, including ceramics, pottery, painting, drawing, zen garden design, and sculpture.

Kiyoshi’s pottery is notable for his utilisation of slip work, with an artistic conceptualisation that is often focused on the clay and water medium of white slip. These white surfaces are stunningly punctuated by strong lines or other shapes, actualised in manganese – evoking the pure, bold contrasts of zen imagery. Many of the creative expressions affirm the artist’s connections to time-honoured Japanese subject matter, including the subtle representation of celestial bodies or other aspects of nature. Through the juxtaposition of white clay and heavy iron, the artist’s plates and other pottery reveal a characteristic fusion of various art forms with zen design.

Kiyoshi is excited about his new work which will be exhibited along with the beautiful  sculptures “inspired by the sea” by Sasa Scheiner.
